Exploring the Impact of Nature-Based Interventions:
A Pilot Study
Fern in Australian National Botanical Gardens, Canberra
Our mission is to harness the therapeutic power of nature to support individuals in achieving greater well-being and participation in meaningful activities. Our recent pilot study explored the impact of an 8-week Nature-Based Intervention (NBI) program on adults with neurodiversity and Down syndrome, focusing on enhancing well-being, mental health, and social skills. The study incorporated guided walks, mindfulness exercises, and sensory strategies in serene natural settings like the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

The program involved adults with neurodiversity who participated in weekly sessions at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. These sessions included:
Guided Walks: Exploring lush rainforest gullies and tranquil fern gardens.
Mindfulness Practices: Meditating to foster emotional regulation.
Sensory Engagement: Creating art.
The gardens provided an ideal setting, with diverse plant life, calming water features, and shaded paths that allowed participants to engage their senses while feeling supported by the natural environment.

KEY OUTCOMES
The program demonstrated significant benefits for participants:
Improved Well-Being: Pre- and post-intervention assessments showed a shift from feelings of stress and isolation to increased relaxation and connection.Enhanced Social Skills: Group activities fostered reciprocal interactions and a sense of community.
Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness exercises helped participants manage anxiety and develop greater self-awareness.
One participant shared, “I feel calm here. The trees make me happy.” This sentiment reflects the profound impact of natural environments on emotional well-being.
Conclusion
This pilot study underscores the potential of NBIs as a powerful tool in occupational therapy. By integrating natural environments into therapeutic practice, we can support individuals with neurodiversity and Down syndrome in achieving greater emotional stability, social engagement, and overall well-being.
